When should an ecommerce brand move to a 3PL?
Most brands don't decide to outsource fulfilment. They get forced into it — usually around the same week that a founder is packing orders at midnight and a hiring plan for a bigger warehouse lands on the desk at the same time.
The earlier signal is quieter: order accuracy starts slipping, dispatch times creep up during peak weeks, and the operations conversation takes up more of the leadership team's attention than the product does. That's the actual tipping point — not a specific order volume.
A 3PL isn't a downgrade in control. Done properly, it's a trade: less time spent on the physical mechanics of shipping, more capacity to spend on the parts of the brand only the founding team can build. The question isn't whether you're big enough. It's whether operations has started costing you more in attention than it's returning in control.
